mRNA on the move

Plantandneuron

Both neurons and plants share a common biological problem; they must communicate information across long distances.

neuron2

A neuron must communication synaptic stimulation back to the Cell Body. This distance can sometimes be more than a meter long!

Sun

A plant must communicate nutrient rich conditions (i.e. a sunny day) underground so it can store the sun's energy.

The solution to this problem is mRNA

Both neurons and plants traffic mRNA from one place to another as a means to communicate information. The Coller lab is interested in this important biological issue. Specifically we are focused on understanding how mRNAs are trafficked, how they are translationally repressed and derepressed along the way, and how they are maintained as stable species resistant to mRNA decay.
