CSU/NEOMED Mentoring Program
Research Education and Training Core- Cleveland State University Partnership
As part of the Research Education and Training Core of the P60 grant, The Center for Reducing Health Disparities has teamed up with Cleveland State University’s (CSU) Center for Health Equity in an effort to address specific aims around not only recruiting, but ensuring the success of minority baccalaureate, graduate and post graduate students. This project proposes to increase the number of health professionals, particularly those from minority backgrounds, as part of a larger effort designed to understand and reduce health disparities in Cleveland. The project builds upon already existing resources at CSU and expands recruitment, education, and retention programs for minority health professionals who have an interest in health disparities and urban health.

CSU has partnered with Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) to create a medical education track emphasizing primary care in urban health with underserved populations. The track begins with an undergraduate concentration in urban health along with traditional pre-medical coursework. The Health Disparities HSC 393/570 and Community-based Participatory Research HSC 502 courses have been added into the curricula of the new undergraduate concentration in Urban Health. By forming these partnerships and establishing the infrastructure necessary to continue these courses and programs, the Research Education and Training Core hopes to facilitate programs to recruit and retain a more diverse health care workforce by facilitating social networks to address career development, psychosocial, and social needs.
