International Bioethics Education Program

Instructors: Nicole Deming, J.D., M.A., Gopal Yadavalli, M.D., Deepak Sarma, Ph.D.

The course provides a combined education in the academic and international worldsIt is relevant to students interested in Medicine, Bioethics, International & Public Health, Religion, Law, History, and Policy (among other fields).

Program Schedule:
Summer 2010: Trip to Hyderabad, India, Tentative dates are the last two weeks in July and first week in August. (Three credits, register for Summer 2010)

Program Topics:
This program:
1 .      Offers students an in-depth study of disease in India by examining the historical, cultural, ethical, medical, religious, and legal aspects that influence HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and TB; 
2 .      Delves into the ethical dilemmas that arise at the intersection of medicine, law, technology, and culture;
3 .      Gives a cross-sectional perspective of health care in India;
4 .      Incorporates the expertise of doctors, administrators, and leaders, both here and abroad, enable a better understanding of how medicine, law and life intersect;
5 .      Provides an opportunity to travel to Hyderabad, India to directly observe Indian culture and health care.

Learning Objectives: 

1.       Understand the biology of HIV/AIDS, TB, and leprosy;
2.       Identify different contributors to the spread of disease, barriers to access to health care and treatment, and develop cultural competency;
3.       Examine the ethical issues in global health as exemplified by the treatment of disease in India, and how they differ in the cultural and political settings of the U.S.;

Instructors:
Nicole Deming, JD, MA is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.  Her teaching and research interests include research regulation, informed consent, and organ transplantation.
Gopal Yadavalli, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and the Chief of the Infectious Diseases Clinic at the Cleveland VA Medical Center, where he also heads up the HIV/AIDS program. Dr. Yadavalli has research and educational projects that are based in southern India and focused on HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.
Deepak Sarma, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of South Asian Religions in the Department of Religious Studies at CWRU. He has published two books on the Madhva School of Indian Philosophy (An Introduction to Madhva Vedanta, and Epistemologies and the Limitations of Philosophical Inquiry: Doctrine in Madhva Vedanta), as well as a reader in Hinduism (Hinduism: A Reader). In addition, he continues to publish articles on method and theory in the study of religion, Hinduism, Hindu bioethics, and Indian Philosophy.

The following items are included in the program fee:
Non-refundable deposit ($250)
Round trip airfare from Cleveland to Hyderabad, India
Lodging for duration of trip dates
Three meals a day (both Indian and Western  food)
In-country transportation
In-country Lectures and Site visits
Bioethics Conference in Hyderabad, India
Field trips and cultural outings

The following items are not included in the program fee, but will need to be paid by participants:
Case Western Reserve University tuition and fees

How can I get help paying for it?
UNIVERSITY FINANCIAL AID OFFICE
If you are a Case Western Reserve University student and receive student loans, you may be able to add the cost of the program fee to your existing loan.  You should contact the Financial Aid Office (Nancy Issa: nancy.issa@case.edu) about adjusting your loans.  The Department of Bioethics will inform the Financial Aid Office of all students who register for the course and provide a cost breakdown.  The maximum amount of a loan for this course will cover all your travel, the program fee, and an additional $500 for meals and spending.

BIOETHICS:
The Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University offers small scholarships to assist students with their travel through the James Lovette Scholarship Fund.  The application deadline is in early December.
