International Bioethics Education Program
Instructor: Stuart J. Youngner, M.D.
This 3-credit course focuses on physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia in the Netherlands, where it has been legalized. The focus of the course will be to understand the cultural context in which euthanasia policy is implemented and compare it to that of the United States. The course includes a ten-day trip over Spring Break, during which time students are taught by faculty at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Nijmegen, as well as prominent guest speakers. Teaching includes regular discussion sessions with the course instructors who attend the trip, and may include some guided field experiences to a hospice, a neonatal intensive care unit, a physician’s home office, and the ce. Students interact with some of the leading proponents and opponents of euthanasia. Prior to the trip, students attend six hours of lectures, either at Case Western Reserve University or via a web-based tutorial, and are expected to become familiar with the extensive literature, including empirical studies, dealing with euthanasia in both countries. Following the trip, students meet with the instructor for an additional four hours.
