Professor Nahida Gordon graduated with a B.S. degree in Mathematics
with honors from the University of Cincinnati and was Phi Beta
Kappa. Her M.S. in Mathematics with honors is from the University
of Wisconsin, and her Ph.D. in Probability and Statistics is
from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Gordon was previously
Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Epidemiology
and Biostatistics, where she served as Director of the Biostatistics
Track from 1994-1997, and Director of the Statistics Core of
the Ireland Cancer Center from 1987-1998. Her role in the Department
is to collaborate on research projects and develop statistics
courses for students in our new Ph.D. program.
Dr. Gordon is committed to excellence in teaching. She has
contributed to curriculum development in the Department of Epidemiology
and Biostatistics and, as a Fulbright Senior Scholar, integrated
an introductory course in biostatistics into the Masters of
Public Health Program in the Department of Community and Public
Health at Birzeit University in Palestine. As a follow-up to
this Fulbright sabbatical, Dr. Gordon has been awarded the Fulbright
Alumni Initiatives Award, which she hopes will enable her to
forge new partnerships between CWRU and Birzeit University.
She has designed and taught courses in categorical data analysis,
survival analysis, and survey of statistics.
Dr. Gordon specializes in survival analysis methodologies,
with an emphasis on using mixture distributions to analyze data
where there are significant competing risks of mortality. The
utilization of mixtures of distributions to describe time of
an event is a relatively new field of research. Dr. Gordon's
approach is unique among the various mixture model approaches,
and is the only one that is specifically applicable to breast
cancer survivorship.
Dr. Gordon has published on the relationship among race/ethnicity,
social class, and overall survival after primary breast cancer
diagnosis. Her work has been supported by funding from NIH and
the American Cancer Society; it has received international attention
and been summarized in national and international publications.
