Study Abroad
Around the world, ethical issues in medicine and the life sciences are addressed in different ways, reflecting different cultural traditions and social systems. Gaining an appreciation for this international diversity is critical to students of bioethics around the world, and can be an illuminating intellectual experience.
To help address this need, the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (USA) has developed study abroad partnerships with a number of academic institutions in other countries. Our goal is to expose our students to diverse perspectives on bioethics through our partners, and to provide our partners' students with intensive experiences with American approaches to bioethics in Cleveland, Ohio.
These 3-credit courses are open to all undergraduate and graduate students from Case Western Reserve University and other universities that will allow the Case credits to transfer. No prerequisite courses are required.

Without a doubt, I strongly recommend the Bioethics Spring Break trips. As a student who desperately wanted to go abroad for a semester, but could not because of commitments on campus, this was the perfect experience. The people we met in the Dutch health system, sex industry, and drug policy were fascinating. Learning from their first hand experiences made class fun and the readings worthwhile. I wish all classes were like this! Also, the class gives enough free time for the students to get to know the city and explore on their own. The bioethics trip to Amsterdam was the perfect trip for an individual interested in any type of health, policy, or drug work. I cannot wait for my next experience!
