Nicole Marie Deming is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She received her B.A. in Biology and Philosophy, with honors, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. In 2005, she earned her M.A. in Bioethics from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. In May of 2008, she received her J.D., with honors, from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and earned concentrations in both International Law and Health Law.

Ms. Deming is primarily based in the Center for Biomedical Ethics at MetroHealth Medical Center, working closely with Mark Aulisio, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Bioethics. She is active in the Clinical Ethics Program and Research Ethics at MetroHealth. Ms. Deming is a member of the Institutional Review Board at MetroHealth and serves as the Research Subject Advocate (RSA) for the NIH-funded Clinical Science Translational Collaborative project.

Ms. Deming’s research interests include the informed consent process, patient/physician communication, professionalism, research regulations, living organ donor transplantation and ethics education.  She is the PI for a pilot study entitled “The Ethical Dimensions of Living Organ Donation from Donor Evaluation to Donor Aftercare. Ms. Deming is also serving on the National Kidney Foundation’s Living Donor Council (LDC) Executive Committee and heading up a project on donor follow up.

Ms. Deming teaches courses in bioethics, professionalism and research ethics. She works closely with students that choose the research track in the Bioethics Masters Program. Her teaching experiences range from working as an instructor at Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center in the National Park to reviewing curriculum for the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research Ethics in the Classroom Science Curriculum in Seattle, WA. She continues to work with area high schools to discuss clinical and research ethics in the classroom.
