Faculty Fellows
Seed Grant Availability Announcement
The Center for Genetic Research Ethics and Law (CGREAL) is pleased to announce its 2007 seed grant program. All Case faculty who are interested in developing research projects on issues in ethics, science policy, and law relevant to the design and conduct of human genetic research are eligible. CGREAL is one of four “Centers of Excellence in Ethics Research” established by the U.S. National Human Genome Research Institute in 2004. The Center draws on faculty from the University and its affiliates to facilitate interdisciplinary inquiry into the implications of new advances in genetic and genomic science.
Overview:
These grants are designed to help Case faculty from disciplines and communities that have been previously under-represented in scholarship on genetic research ethics examine questions related to CGREAL’s mission. They are designed to support exploratory efforts towards the development of larger scholarly projects or lines of research.
- • Applications are limited to University faculty, at any rank/level.
- • Criteria for evaluation will focus on the potential for expanding and enriching the range of perspectives being brought to genetic research ethics and law at Case.
- • Preference will be given to projects that involve investigators in interdisciplinary collaborations and are deemed likely to foster further research able to attract outside support.
- • Requests may be made for up to $10,000 per year. We anticipate making 3-4 awards.
Application Process:
Applications will include the following materials.
- • Abstract. No more than 200 words; written for the educated non-specialist.
- • Research proposal. Limited to five single-spaced pages, and should provide essential background information, the purpose and significance of the proposed work, specifics of the research project (including methods/approaches involved, anticipated outcomes, and potential limitations), an assessment of potential for external funding, and relevant references.
- • Biographical sketch. Two page (NIH format) for PI and Co-PI.
- • Budget. The budget may include supplies, equipment specifically required for the proposed research, release time for faculty, and personnel costs for appropriate students, postdoctoral researchers, and programmers.
- • Other research support. Include current funding with a list of titles, amounts, sources, and grant periods, expired funding for the preceding three years, and pending applications.
- • Regulatory issues. If research involves human subjects, animals, biohazards, or other regulatory issues, the application should identify those concerns on the cover sheet. Selected projects must obtain the appropriate approvals prior to funding. IRB and IACUC approvals are not required prior to proposal submission or review.
Submission, Deadline and Award Schedule:
- • Please submit a copy of the completed application electronically to jennifer.fishman@case.edu by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 30, 2007.
- • Awards will be announced in April.
