International Bioethics Education Program
This 3-credit course focuses on abortion, reproductive rights, and end-of-life decision making in France. The focus of the course is to understand the social, cultural, and political contexts in which these issues are addressed in France, and compare them to the United States. Particular attention is given to the political and legal structures that frame these issues, as well as to the influence of religion. The course includes a ten-day trip to Paris, France over Spring Break. The trip includes guided field experiences in French clinical settings, specifically the palliative care, gynecological, and pediatric services, as well as regular discussion sessions with the course instructors who will attend the trip. Students interact with Bioethics faculty members from both the University of Paris and Case Western Reserve University throughout the lectures and clinical experiences.
Prior to the trip, students attend six hours of lectures, either at Case Western Reserve University or via a web-based tutorial, and are be expected to become familiar with the representative articles and positions from the extensive literature dealing with abortion, reproductive rights, and end-of-life issues in both countries. Following the trip, students meet with the instructor for an additional four hours to discuss and synthesize their experiences.
