The
Graduate School distinguishes between a professional degree and a
university degree. Courses taken for a professional degree, such
as the M.D. or D.D.S., do not qualify for credit toward a university
degree, such as M.S. or Ph.D. Courses taken by professional
students that were beyond the requirements for their professional
degree can be considered for transfer of credit. Exceptions to
these guidelines exist, provided approval is obtained from the Graduate
Executive Council and the Office of Graduate Studies.

Candidacy Examination
With the help
of the dissertation advisor, the student will
write a complete NIH-style grant proposal
(APPENDIX C). This grant proposal may not be on
the student’s anticipated dissertation topic,
but is usually in a related area. The student
must successfully defend this completed proposal
in front of the Candidacy Examination
Committee. This committee shall consist of the
following: the Dissertation Advisor, two members
selected by the Dissertation Advisor in concert
with the student, and two members selected by
the Graduate Research Executive Council. At least one
member of the committee must be a member of the
Graduate Research Executive Council. The
members of the Candidacy Examination Committee
shall have been provided with a copy of the
proposal at least ten working days in advance of
the date set for the Candidacy Examination. A
copy of the grant proposal shall be filed with
the Graduate Research Executive Council.

in Anatomy
Within
90 days of the successful completion of the Candidacy Examination, the
advisor and the candidate shall select a Dissertation Committee
according to the requirement of the School of Graduate Studies.
The Committee is appointed by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the
recommendation of the chairperson of the department. The thesis
committee must contain at least four members. At least two
members must be faculty of the Department of Anatomy. The thesis
advisor must be a member of the committee. All committee members
must be full-time faculty members of Case Western Reserve
University. Additional faculty, including scientists from other
institutions, may be added to the committee depending on the expertise
necessary for the student’s project. Chair of the committee
must be a faculty member of the Department of Anatomy but not the
candidate’s research advisor.
Thesis
committee meets every six months to monitor student’s progress,
advise on alternative approaches, or approve any modifications in
specific aims of the proposal. Student must prepare a written
summary of the research (2-3 pages) that has been accomplished during
the time period between the meetings. This progress report must
be distributed to all committee members at least one week prior to the

advise the student on the format of the written progress report.
The report should contain the following: 1) specific research aims for
the research period, 2) research accomplished toward the aims during
that period, 3) future research aims for the next period. The
committee chair will prepare a written committee meeting report and
will send it to the committee members and the chair of the Graduate
Research Executive Council.
The candidate
shall register for 18 semester hours of ANAT
701, Dissertation Research. Candidate must
register for ANAT 702, Anatomy Research, after
18 credit hours of ANAT 701 have been
completed. Candidate cannot register for ANAT
702 until the coursework requirement has been
completed.
It is the
responsibility of the Dissertation Committee to
supervise the dissertation research. The Graduate Research Executive
Council meets annually to review the
progress of the students who are in research
degree program. The Graduate Research Executive
Council reports to the departmental chair.
Minimum of two
first author manuscripts concerning the
dissertation research must have been accepted
for publication to a recognized, peer-reviewed
