ABOUT YOUTH SERVICE

Who Does Youth Grantmaking?

Sponsors of youth grantmaking programs include K-12 schools, nonprofit organizations, foundations, government entities, and higher education institutions. The reasons for creating youth grantmaking entities are many: involving youth in meaningful decision making; providing youth with opportunities to impact their community; instilling in youth an ethic of service; teaching youth important social, civic, and academic skills; and creating opportunities for youth to develop relationships with other diverse youth and various adults.

Members of youth grantmaking programs include elementary, middle, and high school aged youth. They represent diverse geographies, socio-economic backgrounds, and cultures. Some programs are focused on specific populations of youth (such as school-based) while others aim to unite youth across communities at the city, county, or even state level. Size of youth grantmaking groups can range from as few as 10 to as many as 50 members.
