After you are registered, you will be able to obtain your Case ID card (which will allow you access to the Mandel Center student lounge and certain campus buildings, to borrow materials from the campus libraries, to obtain discounts, etc.). Please be sure to carry this card with you at all times when you are on campus.
While obtaining your ID, you will also be able to purchase a parking permit, if you choose to do so. Most students, however, are able to park at parking meters located near the buildings in which the Mandel Center's courses are normally held. Parking meters (on the street) are free after 6 p.m. If you will be relocating to the Cleveland or campus area, you may want to think about moving into a property that is close to the campus and use one of the various public transportation options available (http://greenie.case.edu or http://www.riderta.com).
If you would like to purchase a parking permit, you can do so on a full-time (day) or evening/weekend basis. Parking permits for the day time are usually limited, but most Mandel Center students find that an evening/weekend permit (which is valid from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends) is sufficient. There are a few parking garages or lots on the north side of campus (the area that includes the new Mandel Center building, the Peter B. Lewis Building, the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, and the School of Law), where most Mandel Center classes are held. Two of the parking garages in that area of campus are lots 46 and 54. For more information about parking, please visit the Parking website at http://parking.case.edu.
Once you recieve your PIN and activation instructions, you will be able to set up your Case email account. (It is imperative that you set up this email account as all University-related communications will be sent via this account.) Instructions on setting up the email account will be sent to you prior to orientation.
All students are strongly advised to have easy access to a reliable computer with, at minimum, basic word processing and spreadsheet capabilities, as well as a reliable, relatively quick internet connection. In this way, students can:
It is recommended that each student has his or her own computer/internet connection, but there are a number of computers available at the University in one of its computer labs.
All registered Case Western Reserve University students are automatically enrolled in the University Student Medical Plan. The cost, which is $660/semester for the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semesters, is automatically added to your tuition charges each semester. As a student, you are required to be enrolled in this medical plan unless you are able to show that you have coverage through another medical plan. If you have health insurance coverage through another health care plan, you must waive the University Student Medical Plan fee. You must waive the fee every semester in SIS if you will be using your own health insurance.
There is currently no on-campus housing available for graduate students. Most students live in the cities/neighborhoods surrounding the University. Examples of popular neighborhoods include: Hessler Road (adjacent to North Campus), Coventry Road (a mile east of campus), Cedar-Fairmount (immediately east of campus), Shaker Square (a mile-and-a-half southeast of campus), and other areas of Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, University Heights, and Lakewood.
Several local agencies provide housing information: Cleveland Heights Housing Service, Shaker Square Area Development Corporation, and University Circle Incorporated.
You can also contact the Shaker Heights Housing Office at 216.491.1330 or The Triangle, an apartment complex very close to the campus, at 216.791.5959. The University's Housing and Residence Life website (http://studentaffairs.case.edu/living/services/aloha/) also lists off-campus housing properties.
So that you can start to familiarize yourself with the University's campus and the area surrounding it, called University Circle, please visit http://www.case.edu/visit/.
The University Bookstore is located in Thwing Center at 11111 Euclid Avenue. The best place to park (before you have secured a parking permit, if you wish to do so) is either at a parking meter on Bellflower Road or in the Severance (underground) parking garage. Please check the University Bookstore's website for hours.
To obtain your books, you should bring the list of courses you are/will be registered for (including the course number and name and/or Class Number). All textbooks are located in the lower level of the bookstore and books for the Mandel Center's courses will be in the section titled "Business." Small cards are located on the shelves and indicate the books/materials required (or recommended) by each course number. The bookstore's staff can be reached at 216.368.2650 or 216.368.1656 (for textbooks).
If you have questions about financial aid (loans, the application process, etc.), please visit the Weatherhead School of Management's Financial Aid website. If you are applying for financial aid or a Mandel Center scholarship, you should have completed the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Once you have completed the form (and therefore started the financial aid application process) and have been entered into the Student Information System (SIS) by the Mandel Center, you will receive an email from the Mandel Center that includes information on activating your Case Network account which you will need to access briefCase (the University's financial aid system). This system allows you to check the status of your financial aid award. Please check briefCase approximately once a week to make sure that all requirements for your financial aid have been satisfied. If you have additional questions about this process, please contact Wendy Jelinek at 216.368.8566.
If you are granted a Mandel Center scholarship, you will receive a scholarship award letter (the Award Letter) that must be signed and returned to the Center to indicate your acceptance of the award. Since Case's Financial Aid Office takes scholarship awards into consideration when calculating the amount of a loan package, they require that an MOA be provided to them indicating the amount of the scholarship award.
The Mandel Center will prepare the MOA and forward it to the Financial Aid Office once you have signed and returned the Award Letter to the Mandel Center. Please allow the Center two weeks from the time that it receives your signed Award Letter, to prepare the MOA and forward it to the Financial Aid Office.
