YPS Presents 2008 Outstanding Youth Service Award

Youth Philanthropy and Service presented this year’s Outstanding Youth Service Award to Andrew Forrest, 12th grader at Westlake High School, at Westlake’s honors assembly on May 23.  This Award recognizes high school students from the Greater Cleveland area with outstanding records of community service.  Nominations may be submitted by anyone who has knowledge of the student’s community service activities.  The Youth Philanthropy and Service Youth Committee, a group of high school students from the Greater Cleveland area, reviews the nominations and selects the award recipient.  The extraordinary excellence of this year’s candidates made the task of selecting the recipient extremely difficult.

Andrew’s application stood out among all the others because of the scope of his service activities.  In school, Andrew was a student facilitator for Leadership Challenge, helped to plan the annual Senior Citizen Prom, and participated in activities such as Halloween Fun Night and the Celebrate Westlake Race.  Outside of the school community, Andrew's involvement ranged from direct interaction with youth at a summer camp to advocacy and education around the crisis in Darfur.  These activities reached beyond the Cleveland community to New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Darfur.  Kathy McGinty, Andrew's advisor and nominator, states that he "is a stand out in our school and community for the service that he has provided throughout his high school career...He is motivated entirely by his desire to help others."

Congratulations, Andrew!
