FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Pranab Chatterjee Retires After 40 Years At Case Western

To the students, alumni, faculty, and staff of the Mandel Center, it is bitter sweet that Pranab Chatterjee, Grace Longwell Coyle Professor in Social Work, will retire from Case Western Reserve University this year.  Dr. Chatterjee, who teaches MAND 420: Organization and Management and is also part of the Mandel Center’s Faculty Council, has been teaching at CWRU since 1967 and joined the Center in 1989.

The Mandel Center honored Dr. Chatterjee and his commitment to the success of the Center with a reception on Friday, May, 23rd.

“Dr. Chatterjee has been a dedicated member of the Mandel Center faculty and a valued colleague,” said Susan Eagan, executive director of the Center.  “Hundreds of Mandel Center students have benefited from his exceptional teaching and scholarship.  We wish him the very best in the coming years.”

Faculty, students and staff were also invited to join Dean Cleve Gilmore at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences to celebrate Dr. Chatterjee’s impact on and contribution to both the School and the Center on Wednesday, June 18th.

According to Dr. Chatterjee, the one thing he will miss the most about teaching at the Mandel Center and the Mandel School is his students.  He also said that his retirement plans include finishing a book on social development.

Dr. Chatterjee shared with us one of his favorite quotes from an anonymous Vaishnab poet that he collected in Northern Bengal in 1997, “You know, knowledge is a very cruel suitor.  He is never really yours, but you are required to court him for a lifetime.”

His great dedication to the Center, as well as his constant quest for knowledge, will continue, as we are fortunate enough to have Dr. Chatterjee for one more year teaching Organization and Management.
