Laura Chisolm, professor of law, recently participated in an invitation-only conference on socially responsible investing at New York University's National Center on Philanthropy and the Law. Dr. Chisolm has also been appointed to be Reporter to the National Uniform Law Commission project on Regulation of Charities. The project will result in draft uniform or model state legislation to serve the following purposes: 1. Codify and articulate state attorney general authority to protect assets that have been dedicated to charitable purposes, whether those assets are held in trust or owned outright by charitable corporation, 2. Specify which transactions and legal proceedings involving a charity require notice to the attorney general, and when the attorney general is a necessary or proper party to a legal action involving a charity, 3. Articulate the attorney general’s investigatory powers and catalog remedies available to the attorney general, and 4. Develop and codify principles to guide attorneys general in their decisions about when and how to proceed in cases of interstate and multi-state problems and to enable and encourage collaborative efforts to oversee charities that operate in multiple states.
David Hammack, Hiram C. Haydn Professor of History, was the moderator for "New Approaches in Philanthropy: 21st Century Giving in Cleveland," on June 19 at the City Club of Cleveland. Several philanthropic activists discussed their new ideas for affecting change in the city.
Jean Kilgore, senior lecturer in marketing, facilitated an all-day Peer Learning Session on Market Research & Planning for the Mandel Center in May. This session was part of Cleveland Community Wealth Collaborative, one component of the partnership between the Mandel Center and Community Wealth Ventures. This partnership represents the opportunity to advance one of the priorities of the Center’s professional development program, helping nonprofit organizations to create new sources of unrestricted revenue that can support and sustain mission-related work.
