Nonprofit E-Notes
Summer 2008
Volume 5, Issue 2

Message From The Executive Director:

Dear Friends of the Mandel Center,

As we are enjoying the first summer in our new home, the Mandel Center has also been busy hosting many exciting events and welcoming several distinguished groups into our beautiful space.

In May, we were honored to hold for the first time in our new building the Center’s Graduation Celebration.  It is with great pleasure that I congratulate the 2008 graduates of the Mandel Center, along with Barbara Clemenson, adjunct instructor and EDM ’08 graduate, who was also recognized at the event for receiving the 2008 Mandel Center Teaching Award.  Congratulations, Barbara, and best wishes to the entire class of 2008!

The Center was also proud to host our Alumni Association’s Annual Meeting in June.  An update on the new by-laws, which were unanimously approved, was provided, along with exciting next steps for the association.  You can find more details in the Annual Meeting article inside this issue.

Home to the international headquarters of the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC), the Mandel Center was thrilled to host representatives from some of the nearly 50 worldwide nonprofit academic centers during NACC’s retreat early this summer.  It was truly an honor, both for the Mandel Center and the entire university, to welcome such an energetic, passionate and impressive group of leaders in our sector.

In the beginning of July, the Center welcomed members of the Cleveland Community Wealth Collaborative, featuring a presentation by Julius Walls Jr., President and CEO of Greyston Bakery in Yonkers, NY.  Read more about Mr. Walls’ enthusiastic discussion of social enterprise ventures as new sources of unrestricted revenue to support the missions of nonprofit organizations.

In Professional Development News, the Center’s Youth Philanthropy and Service program presented this year’s Outstanding Youth Service Award to Andrew Forrest, 12th grader at Westlake High School.  Congratulations, Andrew, on a well-deserved honor.

Also in this issue, you can read about the Center’s Director of Treu-Mart Youth Development Fellowship Program, Patricia Heilbron, who, along with program Fellow Gerald Ford, traveled to Israel to participate in the Youth Futures program.

As we gear up for the 2008-2009 Professional Development season, the Mandel Center has announced its expanded selection of seminars and workshops.  We are also offering a special discounted rate in celebration of our 25th anniversary.  Check out the list of exciting Professional Development topics that will be available to you this year!

Finally, this issue of E-Notes showcases some very inspiring feature stories.  The Alumni Spotlight in this issue is Julian Rogers, MNO ’08, who has recently begun his role as the executive director of Education Voters of Ohio.   You will also find a Student Spotlight with Meran Chang, MNO candidate and summer intern at Save the Children’s Program Development Unit.  We are also pleased to feature our Faculty Spotlight with Deborah O’Neil, Senior Lecturer.  Discover what Professor O’Neil likes to do in her free time, and whose research has had an impact on her own work.

Best wishes for an enjoyable rest of the summer, and stay tuned for more information about all of the exciting happenings at the Center!

Sincerely,

Susan L. Eagan
