AROUND THE CENTER:

Winter 2007 Issue of Nonprofit Management and Leadership

The Winter 2007 issue of Nonprofit Management and Leadership (Volume 18, No. 2), the quarterly journal sponsored by the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations, leads off with a timely and highly original piece, “U.S. Nonprofit Organizations’ Demand for Temporary Foreign Professionals,” by Mary Tschirhart and Lois Wise. Much of the national focus on immigration in the United States has been on illegal immigration and the alleged crowding out of low-wage, low-skill native workers. Tschirhart and Wise examine the demand by U.S. nonprofits for foreign professionals to fill specialized and managerial positions on a temporary basis. It is unlikely that anyone in education, health care, the arts, or numerous other nonprofit program sectors is unaware of the importance of this issue.

In “The Relational Determinants of Nonprofit Web Site Fundraising Effectiveness: An Exploratory Study,” Adrian Sargeant and his co-authors develop a framework for assessing the relational content of nonprofit Internet sites. Their model highlights the role of Web sites in accessibility, the case for support, respect, accountability, interaction, education, customization, and empowerment.

In “An Expanded Theory of Pluralistic Interactions in Voluntary Nonprofit Organizations,” Judith Weisinger and Paul Salipante assert that “traditional ways of conceptualizing cultural diversity in U.S. society are becoming outmoded.” On this basis, they expand on their previously published representation-interaction model of diversity in voluntaristic nonprofits using a grounded theory approach.

Also included are two distinct contributions to the literature in the area of faith-based services—one looking at collaborations and the other at the incubation of new services—along with a study focusing on donor organization–public relationships and the contribution of unrestricted funds. Finally, a fascinating case study looks at policy changes at three major national foundations, raising important questions about private foundations in relation to issues of innovativeness, accountability, and independence.
