Message from the Executive Director:
Dear Friends of the Mandel Center,
The Mandel Center is already off to a very exciting start this fall. We began by welcoming an impressive group of new students from many different backgrounds, as well as different geographical locations including Israel and Uganda. This new group of students is also comprised of some career changers, in addition to individuals who have been involved in the nonprofit sector for several years. Read more about our new class of students in this issue of E-Notes.
The Mandel Center is also thrilled to finally inhabit our new building, located at Bellflower Road and Hessler court. Classes have been held in our new home since the beginning of the semester. The Center's administrative offices will be located there in mid October. For photographs of the Mandel Center's new home, please visit our website.
A formal building dedication will be held on Monday, November 5 and will include remarks from CWRU President Barbara R. Snyder, Morton L. Mandel, and other members of the Mandel Center community. Preceding the dedication ceremony, Bruce Sievers, Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, will present an academic seminar entitled "Private Means for Public Ends: The Conundrum of Civil Society".
This year, the Mandel Center participated for the first time in CWRU's Alumni Weekend. Mandel Center alumni were invited to attend an Alumni Reception and New Building Open House on Friday, October 5th. This exciting social event was a great opportunity for alumni to reconnect with old friends and tour the new building. Attendees also received an update on the Alumni Association's Strategic Planning process. Alumni will be sent a formal communication about these updates in the near future.
As part of Alumni Weekend, the Mandel Center held a nonprofit lecture on Saturday, October 6th. Melissa Berman, President and CEO of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, presented "The Future of Charitable Giving: Practicing New Forms of Philanthropic Engagement" to a room full of Mandel Center community members in the new building.
With the Academic Seminar for the New Building Dedication, as well as the Alumni Weekend nonprofit lecture, the Center is pleased and honored to welcome such prominent, national speakers in our new home.
In our Student Spotlight, you can read about Lee Lazar, CNM candidate, who has had an interesting career path spanning several different sectors. Find out what influenced him to make the move into the nonprofit sector.
This issue's Alumni Spotlight is Jerome Davies, MNO '94, Senior Vice President for Development at KU Endowment Association. Read about how Jerome's Mandel Center education has had a profound impact on his professional life.
Our faculty members have also been up to some interesting work, which you can check out in the Faculty Highlights article. Barbara Clemenson, Adjunct Instructor, describes what she enjoys most about teaching our graduate students in the Faculty Feature portion of this issue.
We will continue to keep you updated on the many exciting events happening at the Center over the course of this year, and we look forward to visiting with all of you in our new building!
Sincerely,
Susan L. Eagan
Executive Director and Mandel Professor
