YPS Hosts 11th Annual Workshop
The Mandel Center's Youth Philanthropy and Service (YPS) program held its 11th Annual Workshop on April 5, 2007 at the Holiday Inn South in Independence, Ohio.
The YPS Annual Workshop provides K-12 teachers and administrators, youth development professionals, and K-12 youth with an opportunity to learn best practices in service-learning and hear about local projects.
The Annual Workshop, which was originally scheduled for February 14 but had to be cancelled due to inclement weather, had over 200 attendees from K-12 schools and community-based organizations. The Workshop included 20 breakout sessions (including 6 with youth presenters) and 22 exhibitors.
The day kicked off with keynote speaker Colonel Robert Gordon, Senior Vice President for Civic Leadership at City Year, encouraging the audience to "Be. Know. Do." In his current position, Colonel Gordon oversees the recruitment, selection, education, and training of City Year's corps of idealistic young leaders, the continued development of City Year's more than 9,000 alumni as "leaders for life," and the engagement of children and teens in City Year's civic leadership initiatives. He recently served as an Army Colonel and the Director of the American Politics at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he oversaw the administration, conduct, and teaching of American Politics taught to over 1,100 cadets.
