President of The Wallace Foundation Leads Discussion on Helping Youth Flourish After School

On October 17, 2006, The Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations' Treu-Mart Youth Development Fellowship Program hosted a forum led by M. Christine DeVita, President of The Wallace Foundation. Ms. DeVita's remarks focused on "Hours of Opportunity: New Community Approaches to Helping Kids Flourish After School." Following Ms. DeVita's talk, participants engaged in a discussion around youth issues.

The audience for this presentation and discussion consisted of adults who work with youth during out-of-school-time, community leaders and policymakers knowledgeable in this area. During the discussion, participants talked about what other cities are already successfully doing in this area, new insights, and community-wide or system-based approaches to working with youth during out-of-school-time.

The Wallace Foundation has more than a decade of experience supporting learning opportunities in urban parks, libraries, literacy programs and museums around the country. The Foundation is currently working with a select number of cities in the "Learning in Communities" initiative. Learning in Communities is a city-based strategy aimed at ensuring that children, particularly from low- and moderate-income families, have meaningful participation in high quality programs outside of school that contribute to their learning achievement and eventual career success. A distinctive hallmark of "Learning in Communities" is its emphasis on leadership: rallying a wide range of political, business and community leaders around the importance of providing high-quality programs to children who need them most.
