Mandel Center and BVU Present Seminar for Nonprofits: Building a Balanced Scorecard
The Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations, in partnership with Business Volunteers Unlimited (BVU), invited board and senior staff members of nonprofit organizations to a seminar entitled "Building a Balanced Scorecard: A Tool to Measure and Communicate Nonprofit Performance" on Friday, October 27, 2006.
Increasingly, funders and other stakeholders are asking for measurable results from the organizations they support. They are expecting nonprofits to take a strategic approach to achieve their vision and objectives. To this end, a number of nonprofits are using a tool called the Balanced Scorecard to measure and report performance to their stakeholders.
A Balanced Scorecard looks at both financial and non-financial performance to evaluate the organization's ability to achieve its mission from the following perspectives:
- Customer (stakeholder)
- Employee
- Financial
- Internal Business Processes
Additionally, a Balanced Scorecard approach helps the organization to recognize cause and effect relationships and identify areas of focus to improve performance.
Two local experts, Michele Seyranian and Sharon Sobol Jordan, have been leading Balanced Scorecard initiatives in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. In this session they covered:
- Definition and structure of a Balanced Scorecard
- Who should be involved in the development process
- Steps to develop a Balanced Scorecard
- Benefits your organization can expect from executing a Balanced Scorecard
