YPS Committee Announces Recipients of Award for Outstanding Community Service
The Mandel Center's Youth Philanthropy and Service Youth Committee is pleased to announce this year's recipients of the Award for Outstanding Community Service. The Award recognizes high school students with outstanding records of community service. The YPS Youth Committee presents this honor to students from the Greater Cleveland area. The 2006 recipients are:
Megan Keefe
Beaumont High School, 10th Grade
Megan's involvement in her church and school communities extends beyond just "service activities." She describes her commitment to service as "a lifestyle." This is clearly reflected in the many ways Megan finds to give her time, talent, and treasure. She has volunteered for Forest Hill Church, Habitat for Humanity, Beaumont School, Scottish American Cultural Society, and Race for the Cure, among others. In speaking of her role as the Youth Deacon of her church, Pastor John Lentz states that "Megan fulfills this calling admirably. Her enthusiasm, warmth, and joy radiate."
Madeleine Bruml
Hawken Upper School, 11th Grade
Inspired by local media's focus on the "brain drain," Madeleine set out to "impress upon her peers that Cleveland is a great place for young professionals to live, work, and thrive," says Jennifer Thomas of the Civic Innovation Lab. Through a grant from the Civic Innovation Lab and corporate contributions, she started Cleveland Brain Gain and created marketing materials, including a DVD and website, about the benefits of living and working in Cleveland. She has also engaged a group of 25 high school representatives to promote the program within their representative schools.
Paul Glazer
Garfield Heights High School, 12th Grade
Paul's passion for service goes beyond his own extensive volunteer activities. He dedicates a significant amount of his time, talent, and treasure to promoting service opportunities to others. Paul has created a website, brochure, posters, highlights video, and commercials promoting activities of the Garfield Heights High School Students of Service group. He also won a Best Video Award for a video he created for the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Paul also leads by example, acting as the student coordinator for the school's blood drive, Adopt-A-Family, Wrapping for Happiness, and Relay for Life programs.
