Jennifer Dowdell Armstrong, MNO '00, graduated summa cum laude from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in May. She will be starting her new job as an associate at the Cleveland office of Thompson Hine LLP this September.
Nicole Charmain Crawford, CNM '00, celebrated her first anniversary as Executive Director of Dacotah Tipis this July. As one of the most impoverished reservations in the country, the Habitat for Humanity affiliate has focused on the service area of the Crow Creek Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Its mission is to help eliminate poverty housing. If anyone is interested in volunteering to build a home by yourself or with a group this fall with Dacotah Tipis and its partner family, please contact hfhtipis@midstatesd.net. You can also visit the website. Faith-base, civic and fraternal groups are welcome!
Elizabeth Freer, CNM '03, moved from Cleveland to San Francisco in the past year and is working at a small cost consulting and project management firm that works almost exclusively for NPOs. Most of their clients are museums, zoos, aquariums, and other one-of-a-kind projects. So, while she's switched to the for-profit sector, all of her clients are nonprofit and fascinating. Specifically, Elizabeth is working as a project manager (in an Owner's Representative capacity) for the construction project undertaken by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Lucinda Lavelli, MNO '91, has accepted an appointment as Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Lucinda also recently married Kenneth Webster, MD.
Ann Lucas, MNO '00, left her role as Director of Professional Development Programs at the Mandel Center in June and has accepted a new position as Executive Director of the Nonprofit Resource Center in Sacramento, California. The Nonprofit Resource Center is a management support organization working with a wide range of nonprofits.
Sheila Magero, MNO '06, upon earning her degree and returning to Uganda, began working in June as the Volunteer Programs and Exchanges Officer at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University's Medical School in Kampala. Currently, Sheila is going through a crash course on the work of the IDI and the plans the Director would like to see implemented. The IDI Director envisions a future where their HIV positive clients, or "Friends" as they are referred to at IDI, become the driving force for HIV prevention and support for drug adherence in the community. The IDI provides free antiretroviral therapy (ART) for over 8,000 adults living with AIDS per year. Sheila's role is to drive the Creativity Initiative, a program that will mobilize these people to use their creative energy and regained health/strength to reach out into the community and make the lives of other PLWA's better, as well as lead HIV prevention efforts. They will work as volunteers, which will be a challenge in an environment where the majority of Friends are unemployed and belong to Kampala's urban poor. Sheila will also coordinate the activities of international professionals that volunteer their expertise to the IDI. In the meantime, she is making up for lost time with her daughter Moira as she's now able to attend her school sports days and other fun activities.
Sarah Masters, MNO '95, is the new Director of Development for Fellowship Square, which provides housing for 700 low and very low income elderly in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.
Michael C. Mayse, MNO '05, replaced Paul Buccino as of May 1st as President and CEO of Neighborhood House Association in Lorain, Ohio. Michael most recently served as President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland, where he was responsible for the executive direction of the organization along with development, financial controls, public relations and an annual budget of $950,000. He also successfully implemented a multi-level development campaign including operating, endowment and capital funds. During his tenure at Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mr. Mayse received the "Anne E. Casey" Award for Social Work.
Kimberly Moss, MNO '01, joined the staff of Summa Health System as Workforce Development Specialist and Human Resource Representative. Kimberly will be responsible for developing and coordinating a workforce development plan and proactive workforce development strategies to develop a ready pool of future healthcare workers for the organization. Summa Health System, one of the largest organized health systems in Ohio and the largest employer in Summit County, includes Akron City, St. Thomas and Cuyahoga Falls General hospitals, the Summa Care health plan, Summa Health Network and Summa Hospitals Foundation.
Jessica Ollis, MNO '03, will be leaving her position at Case on August 1st to accept the position of Director of Finance & Business Development at the Cleveland Clinic, Division of Post Acute Medicine.
Philip Tavil, MNO/MSSA'96, recently celebrated his 10th year as Executive Director of Children First, an organization that serves 550 very young children, six weeks to five years of age, and their families throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties in Florida. The vast majority of the families served live below the federal poverty level ($20,000 for a family of four). The children are served through Head Start, Early Head Start, and our Early Childhood Development program. In May, Children First was selected as a Program of Excellence by the National Head Start Association. This is the highest designation a program may receive through the NHSA Quality Initiative. Children First is one of 25 programs in the nation, out of 2,700, to be awarded this prestigious honor. The selection process is based on an assessment of program delivery, governance, fiscal management, human resource management, and community partnerships. Philip says that the knowledge he gained and the skills he developed at the Mandel Center and MSASS have served him extremely well in his professional endeavors.
