AROUND THE CENTER
Staff Spotlight: Rebecca Zirm, Director of Recruitment
Q: What was the education and career path that led you to your position as Director of Recruitment with the Mandel Center?
A: I attended the University of Wisconsin/Madison as an undergrad where I majored in history. After working for several years after graduation, I enrolled in law school at the Cleveland Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University. I practiced law with the law firm of Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan and Aronoff for approximately six years before leaving to raise my family. During my time at home I spent evenings, and then days when my children were in school, working in independently owned bookstores (Booksellers and then Appletree Books). In 1998 I decided to return to my alma mater, the Cleveland Marshall College of Law, where I worked for three years as an Assistant Director of Admissions before coming to the Mandel Center.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your career with the Mandel Center?
A: I have always enjoyed working in a university setting because of the wealth of educational opportunities available both inside and outside of the classroom. In particular, I am pleased to be working at the Mandel Center due to my strong commitment to the nonprofit sector and my interest in serving the community. I believe in the mission of the Center and feel that I am assisting in the development of a strong and well-educated nonprofit workforce by bringing in students with excellent leadership potential. I also feel privileged to meet a diverse group of high quality students. I am humbled by their eclectic background and accomplishments.
Q: What are your personal goals for the Mandel Center?
A: I would like to see an increase in the number of applicants from around the U.S. and other countries, and would like to see even more scholarship opportunities available for students.
Q: What other organizations or groups are you involved in at this time?
A: I am currently serving on the Idealist.org Graduate Admissions Advisory Board. I am also working on establishing a community service requirement for students at Cleveland Heights High School.
Q: What are your personal interests, hobbies, etc?
A: I spend most of my free time seeing films, reading books, and gardening. I also enjoy visiting historical sites in the U.S.
