Students Contribute to Presentation at Geological Society of America

Dr. David Saja, Curator of Mineralogy and Dr. Joe Hannibal, Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology, collaborated with sculptor Charles Herdon to curate "Glacial Erratica," an art exhibit that integrated geological concepts at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH). Mandel Center students, Eric Dicken and Sarah Stilgenbauer, both MNO candidates, chose to focus on this exhibit as their project for the Quantitative Analysis class, taught by Dr. Robert Fischer.

Dicken and Stilgenbauer designed and fielded a survey that asked museum visitors to share their reactions to an art exhibit in a traditional science museum. The curators felt that this information would be helpful in their presentation, "Glacial Erratica: Combining Art and Geology at a Natural History Museum" which was given in April at the Regional meeting of the Geological Society of America. The students provided their original data, analyzed additional surveys, and interpreted findings for the presentation. Dicken and Stilgenbauer are listed as third and fourth authors of the presentation.

"It was wonderful to see an educational exercise become usable research," Stilgenbauer said. "We were flattered that they asked us to collaborate."
