YPS Holds Community Discussion on State of Youth Service in Greater Cleveland

On Wednesday, September 28, 2005, the Mandel Center's Youth Philanthropy and Service (YPS) program held a community discussion on the state of youth service in the Greater Cleveland area. Approximately 40 people representing numerous local organizations attended this discussion.

Leading this discussion, which was held at Trinity Commons in downtown Cleveland, were panelists Rebekah Dorman from United Way of Greater Cleveland, Charlotte Jones-Ward from the Ohio Department of Education Learn & Serve, and Frank Underwood from the Ohio Community Service Council.

The panelists provided thoughtful insight and reactions to the findings of the Report on Youth Service in Greater Cleveland, released by the Mandel Center last January. One common theme among the panelists was the importance of the role of youth decision-making. They indicated surprise at the finding that respondents reported a low level of success and a low desire to strengthen their capacity in this component within their programs. The panel discussion was followed by an opportunity for attendees to participate in small group discussions about their own reactions to the report and experiences in youth service.

If you would like to view a copy of the report, or a summary of the community discussion, please visit the Report on Youth Service webpage.

The community discussion was co-sponsored by the Mandel Center, Ohio Community Service Council, and Ohio Department of Education.
