Graduation Celebration Honors Mandel Center Graduates

The Mandel Center hosted a graduation celebration on Sunday, May 15th to honor the 21 Master of Nonprofit Organizations (MNO), 14 Certificate of Nonprofit Management (CNM), and 11 dual degree students receiving their degrees this year. Please click for a list of the 2005 graduates.

Mandel Center Executive Director Susan Eagan spoke at the celebration, congratulating the graduates as well as several faculty members and alumni on their many accomplishments over the past year.

Shilpa Kedar was recognized as the winner of the Mandel Center Student of the Year Award, a peer-nominated honor. In addition to Shilpa's full-time studies in the MNO program, she has demonstrated leadership in a variety of volunteer and professional capacities. She has worked in Romania, India and the United States completing organizational assessments. This past summer, she worked with the Self Employed Women's Association in her home country of India. In addition to her international work, Shilpa has also supported local efforts such as Local Initiatives Support Corporation and Cleveland Social Venture Partners. As the Student Committee Co-Chair for LINK (Local International Konnections) at Case, she used her unique background to combine a deep understanding of international issues with her passion for the nonprofit sector. One of her nominators, a faculty member, described Shilpa as "typifying the kind of student that will leave the Mandel Center and have a substantial impact on the nonprofit sector."

During the Celebration, Susan Eagan also recognized Kathy Agle, Jennifer McAnlis Harvey and Kimberly Sommer for receiving the Dean's Academic Achievement Award. This honor is presented for outstanding academic achievement in the MNO program by the Weatherhead School of Management Dean's office to the graduate(s) who have the highest cumulative GPA for his or her degree program in each graduating class.

This year's recipient of the Mandel Center Teaching Award was John Yankey, who demonstrated a true dedication to the Mandel Center, its students, and the nonprofit sector through his teaching. Dr. Yankey has been awarded this Mandel Center honor three times, and has also been named an additional three times to the Outstanding Teacher Award by students from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. Criteria for the Mandel Center Teaching Award include dedication to the development of Mandel Center students and their educational experience as demonstrated in one or more of the following areas: creation of a dynamic, high impact learning environment within the classroom; demonstration of effective and engaging teaching methods; encouragement and guidance toward life-long learning; and exceptional accessibility, assistance and guidance given to individual students in helping to resolve questions and problems.

The Mandel Center would like to thank the faculty and special guests who attended and helped make the graduation celebration such a special and fun event.
