Professor Evelyn Brody Presents the Norman A. Sugarman Memorial Lecture

Professor Eveyln Brody

Professor Evelyn Brody, who has written extensively on the topic of nonprofit accountability, presented the Norman A. Sugarman Memorial Lecture "Governing in a Fishbowl: The Effects of Sunlight on Nonprofit Accountability," in November 2004.

The presentation explored how the seemingly insatiable hunger for information about specific charities -from federal tax filings on the Web, to front-page news stories, to report cards by ratings agencies, to congressional investigations, to the blogs of admirers and critics - affects all who govern charities. As legislatures turn to disclosure as the primary tool of regulation, Professor Brody identified some fundamental questions that should be addressed, and how even the prospect of disclosure should improve board monitoring and governance.

Evelyn Brody is Professor of Law at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, and serves as Associate Editor of the Mandel Center's Nonprofit Management and Leadership journal. She is an associate scholar with the Urban Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy and serves on the board of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action.
