Mandel Center Student Attendance Policy for Courses

Mandel Center students are expected to attend each class for courses in which they are enrolled. Most Mandel Center classes involve significant student participation in discussions, and the quality of the class experience for all students is adversely affected by student absences. The calculation of final grades often includes student participation in class discussion as a factor.

Occasionally circumstances arise which preclude attendance at one or more class sessions. It is the student's responsibility to inform the professor in advance of an inability to attend a particular class. For courses offered on a weekly basis during the fall or spring semester, students may not miss more than 20% of the sessions for a course. This would typically constitute 3 classes. For courses offered in an intensive format, students may not miss more than 20% of the class sessions; this would constitute one day for the standard intensive format course. Please note that instructors have the discretion to require a stricter attendance policy and make-up assignments for any amount of time missed from class. Students are strongly encouraged to review the attendance requirements in the course syllabus. If a student anticipates that work or family responsibilities will lead to multiple class absences, he or she is encouraged to take the course in another semester.

If a student misses 20% or more of the class sessions for any reason, he or she will not be eligible to receive credit for the course and will be required to withdraw from it. This may result in financial and/or academic penalties. Instructors may permit exceptions at their discretion for serious illnesses or family emergencies.
