FINANCING YOUR EDUCATION

TUITION

Tuition for the 2010-2011 academic year is $34,320. This amount is based on a full-time course load of 12 credit hours per semester. A full-time student enrolled for more than 12 credit hours in a given semester does not incur additional costs unless he/she exceeds 20 credit hours. Tuition covers instructional costs and computer usage. Books and living expenses are separate student expenses.

The 2010-2011 per credit hour tuition rate for part-time MNO and CNM students (those taking 11 credit hours or less per semester) is $1,430.

SCHOLARSHIPS

  • Mandel Center scholarships are available to both Certificate and Master's degree students.
  • Scholarships are generally awarded for the length of the student's program, or as specified in the student's scholarship award letter.
  • International students are eligible to apply for scholarships as long as they provide the Mandel Center with appropriate financial documentation regarding available income and annual expenses.
  • Mandel Center Scholarships: The Mandel Center offers scholarship awards based upon a combination of academic merit and financial need considerations.
    1. Merit determinations are based upon multiple factors including, but not limited to, undergraduate GPA, GMAT score (MNO candidates only), work and volunteer experience, letters of recommendation, and the personal essay.
    2. In determining financial need the Mandel Center uses the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) calculation which is listed on the Student Aid Report (SAR) that the student receives after completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Every Mandel Center student (with the exception of international students) applying for scholarship must complete the FAFSA Form, regardless of whether he/she is applying for federal loans and must provide the Mandel Center with a copy of the SAR. (See section on Loans below for more information on completing the FAFSA form.)
    3. Students interested in applying for scholarships are encouraged to complete their applications for admission by April 30th if applying for the fall semester, and November 1st if applying for the spring semester. Students who complete their applications before these dates will receive priority for scholarship consideration.
    4. For other potential sources of scholarship funds see the following:
  • AmeriCorps Scholarship: The Mandel Center also offers scholarships to AmeriCorps alumni admitted to the full-time MNO degree program. The scholarship award is in an amount equal to twice the AmeriCorps educational benefit up to thirty-five percent (35%) of the applicable tuition rate in any given semester. In addition, the Mandel Center will waive the $25 application fee.
  • Teach for America Alumni Scholarship: The Mandel Center offers scholarship to Teach for America alumni admitted to the full-time MNO degree program. The scholarship award is in an amount equal to twice the Teach for America educational benefit up to thirty-five percent (35%) of the applicable tuition rate in any given semester. In addition the Mandel Center will waive the $25 application fee.
  • Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Scholarship: The Mandel Center offers scholarships to Returned Peace Corps Volunteers admitted to the full-time MNO degree program. The scholarship award is in an amount equal to forty percent (40%) of the applicable tuition rate in any given semester. In addition, the Mandel Center will waive the $25 application fee.

LOANS

  • Federal student loans are available to both Certificate and Master's degree students who are US citizens or permanent residents.
  • International students are not eligible for federal student aid, but may apply for private loans if they register on a full time basis, and have a US co-signer.
  • While scholarships are awarded by the Mandel Center, all loans are processed through Case's Financial Aid Office. Information about the loan process (including application forms) can be found on the Weatherhead School of Management's Financial Aid website or on the University Financial Aid website.
  • To be eligible for federal loans, students must register for a minimum number of credit hours each semester as follows:
    • Full-Time Students - 12 credit hours in the Fall and Spring semesters or 3 in the Summer semester.
    • Part-Time Students - 5 credit hours in the Fall and Spring semesters or 3 in the Summer semester.
  • A student applying for federal loans must submit the following to the University's Financial Aid Office:
    1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The FAFSA can be completed online (the fastest route) or a student can request a paper version. FAFSA forms are also available from Case's Financial Aid Office, and in electronic form on their website. The school code that must be included on the FAFSA form is #E00080 which is the code for Case-WSOM (Weatherhead School of Management). Once the FAFSA form has been completed, a Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent to the student from the federal processor. After the student has reviewed and approved the SAR, the federal processor sends the information to Case. (Note: If applying for Mandel Center Scholarships, a student must send a copy of the SAR directly to the Mandel Center.)

    2. Case Application for Financial Aid

In addition to the FAFSA form, a student must complete the Case Application for Financial Aid, which can be mailed to the student or downloaded from Case's Financial Aid website. This form should be filled out and sent directly to Case's Financial Aid Office.

    3. Copies of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Forms.

Applicants must submit copies of their prior year's IRS Forms. Married applicants should include copies of their spouse's IRS Forms.

  • The Memo of Assistance (MOA)

If you are granted a Mandel Center scholarship, you will receive a scholarship award letter (the Award Letter) that must be signed and returned to the Center to indicate your acceptance of the award. Since Case's Financial Aid Office takes scholarship awards into consideration when calculating the amount of a loan package, they require that an MOA be provided to them indicating the amount of the scholarship award.

The Mandel Center will prepare the MOA and forward it to the Financial Aid Office once you have signed and returned the Award Letter to the Mandel Center. Please allow the Center two weeks from the time that it receives your signed Award Letter, to prepare the MOA and forward it to the Financial Aid Office.

Should I apply for loans?

Many students express anxiety about taking out loans to finance their education at the Mandel Center. When considering whether to apply for a loan, please keep the following in mind:

  • The borrower may receive up to $8,500 per year in subsidized federal loans, depending upon his or her financial need. Subsidized loans do not require the borrower to pay interest during the time that he/she is in graduate school, during the 6 month grace period following the completion of the program, or during any authorized period of deferment.
  • There are several repayment plans available to students. They are as follows:
    1. Standard Repayment Plan - The borrower pays a fixed amount over a 10 year period.
    2. Extended Repayment Plan - The borrower repays over a period of 12 to 30 years, depending on the amount of the loan. Minimum monthly payment is $50.
    3. Graduated Repayment Plan - Payments are lower at first and then increase, usually every two years, over a period of 12-30 years, depending on the amount of the loan.
    4. Income Contingent Repayment Plan - Monthly payments are based on the borrower's yearly income and family size, as well as the interest rate and amount of the loan. As income rises or falls, so do the payments. After 25 years, any remaining balance on the loan is forgiven.
  • Loan Forgiveness - The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 established a new public service loan forgiveness program. Through this program, debt remaining after 10 years of full-time employment in public service, is discharged. The borrower must have made 120 payments as part of the Direct Loan program in order to  obtain this benefit.

Public service jobs include, among others, positions with tax exempt 501(c)(3) organizations. Only loan payments made after October 1, 2007 will be considered.

Borrowers seeking to take advantage of the loan forgiveness program should choose the Income-Contingent Repayment Plan (available now) or the Income-Based Repayment Plan (available starting July 2009), if eligible.

For more detailed information on loan forgiveness, see the following website, http://www.studentloanborrowerassistance.org.

  • Deferment on federal loans is possible for up to three years, in cases of economic hardship or an inability to find full-time employment.

  • For more information on repayment plans, see http://www.finaid.org/loans/repayment.phtml.
