3+1 Program

The 3+1 program is intended for prospective Chinese LL.M. students who have completed their third undergraduate year and completed the requirements of their sending school for their undergraduate degree. The students spend their fourth undergraduate year at CWRU Law School earning a LL.M. degree and are eligible for a generous scholarship. The program allows students to earn both their undergraduate and LL.M. degrees in four years, rather than five, saving a year's time and tuition.

  1. Complete the third year of their undergraduate law degree program and attain an average GPA of at least 80% over the three years of study;
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in the English language by earning:
    1. a paper based TOEFL score of at least 580, including a score of at least 4.0 in the Test of Written English; or
    2. an internet-based TOEFL score of at least 90 with at least 23 in listening, 23 in reading, 22 in speaking and 22 in writing; or
    3. an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with not less than 6.5 in the reading and listening components and 6.0 on the writing and speaking components; or
    4. an Academic English Language Proficiency test by Pearson (PTE) score of at least 64 with at least 64 in listening and reading and 60 in writing and speaking; AND
    5. the relevant test above must have been taken within the relevant validation period; and
  3. Obtain an official written statement from the sending school confirming that the student has successfully completed all requirements for his or her undergraduate degree at the sending school.

Admission. It is within CWRU's discretion whether to admit qualified non-U.S. applicants into the 3+1 program based on the size of the entering LL.M. class and in accordance with its other normal criteria and practices.

Regular LL.M. Applicants. Students who do not meet these Minimum Entry Requirements are still encouraged to apply for the CWRU LL.M. program, but must complete four undergraduate years and receive their undergraduate degree. Such students would not be eligible to receive the scholarship funds awarded under the 3+1 program.
