Server Hosting and Administration

ITS provides the Case research community with hosting services for selected Dell servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Windows 2003 Server and for selected Sun servers running Solaris. Hosting includes rack space, power, UPS, interface with vendor warranty and service personnel, operating system installation and maintenance, system administration, and backup. A detailed Service Level Agreement for server hosting by the ITS Server and Storage Engineering group is available here. Specific appendices governing the hosting of Windows on Dell servers, Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Dell servers, and Solaris on Sun servers are also available. For researchers who prefer to provide for their own operations, administration, backup, etc., ITS is preparing a "hardware hoteling" service to provide a secure and environmentally controlled space for owner administered hardware. Please contact roger.bielefeld@case.edu for details.

Server configurations that are maintainable by the ITS Server and Storage Engineering group include the following models from Dell and Sun Microsystems. The technical information provided below is accurate as of 25 January 2006. In comparing models, note that processor clock rates for different processor types (e.g., Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron) do not directly reflect performance differences between the processor types.

Dell servers

For basic computational needs with modest internal storage requirements, the PowerEdge 1850 servers offer single-core and dual-core Intel Xeon processors in single-processor and dual-processor configurations with up to 16 GB of ECC DDR2 main memory. Processor speeds as high as 3.8 GHz are available. Maximum internal disk storage is 600 Gigabytes (2 x 300 GB SCSI drives). This server occupies one unit of rack space.

For basic computational needs with larger internal storage requirements, the PowerEdge 2850 servers offer single-core and dual-core Intel Xeon processors in single-processor and dual-processor configurations with up to 16 GB of ECC DDR2 main memory. Processor speeds as high as 3.8 GHz are available. Maximum internal disk storage is 1.8 Terabytes (6 x 300 GB SCSI drives). This server occupies two units of rack space.

For more taxing computational requirements, the PowerEdge 6850 servers offer up to four Intel Xeon single-core or dual-core processors, with speeds up to 3.66 GHz, and as much as 64 GB of ECC DDR2 main memory. Maximum internal disk storage is 1.5 Terabytes (5 x 300 GB SCSI drives). This server occupies four units of rack space.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 are supported by ITS on all of these Dell servers. All of these Dell servers are available with redundant power supplies for high-availability requirements. Other Dell server models are available that may be supportable by ITS. See http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/rack_optimized?c=us&cs=RC956904&l=en&s=hied or contact roger.bielefeld@case.edu for details.

Sun servers

For basic computational needs with very modest internal storage requirements, the Sun Fire X4100 and servers offer single-core and dual-core AMD Opteron processors in single-processor and dual-processor configurations with up to 16 GB of ECC DDR main memory. Processor speeds as high as 2.8 GHz are available. Maximum internal disk storage is 292 GB (4 x 73 GB SAS drives). This server occupies one unit of rack space.

For basic computational needs with modest internal storage requirements, the Sun Fire V20z servers offer single-core and dual-core AMD Opteron processors in single-processor and dual-processor configurations with up to 16 GB of ECC DDR main memory. Processor speeds as high as 2.6 GHz are available. Maximum internal disk storage is 600 GB (2 x 300 GB SCSI drives). This server occupies one unit of rack space.

For more taxing computational requirements with larger internal storage requirements, the Sun Fire V40z servers offer up to four single-core and dual-core AMD Opteron processors in single-processor and dual-processor configurations with up to 32 GB of ECC DDR main memory. Processor speeds as high as 2.8 GHz are available. Maximum internal disk storage is 1.8 TB(6 x 300 GB SCSI drives). This server occupies three units of rack space.

The Sun Solaris operating system is supported by ITS on all of these Sun servers. All of these Sun servers are available with redundant power supplies for high-availability requirements. Other Sun server models, including servers with SPARC processors, are available that may be supportable by ITS. See www.sun.com/servers or contact roger.bielefeld@case.edu for details.
