ITS Advanced Research Computing offers services to assist faculty in creating and operating databases and related applications connected to their research. These services include Oracle database hosting and administration services operated by ITS on centrally supported clustered servers. At present, the servers are two Sun V890 servers, each with 64 gigabytes of memory and 8 dual-core processors, running the Solaris operating system. Protection against hardware failure is provided by Veritas clustering technology with the Oracle High Availability option. The standard agreement provides each subscriber with web access to an Oracle database via the Oracle Application Express (formerly known as "HTML DB") service at a cost of $25 per month for two gigabytes of storage following a $250 initial setup fee. These basic services can be adjusted according to the needs of the individual researcher. There is no need to purchase specialized hardware or software. Databases and applications created using this service are fully accessible using any computer on the Internet with a web browser.
Advanced Research Computing also provides database design and programming services for the creation of databases and applications connected with faculty research projects. Typically these services are provided via salary support from funded research grants but these services are also available on a weekly, daily, or hourly basis. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
