The Division of Information Technology Services (ITS) at Case provides Oracle database hosting and administration services for researchers on centrally supported clustered servers. At present, the underlying hardware consists of two Sun Fire V880 servers, each with 8 UltraSPARC III Cu processors and 32 gigabytes of memory, running the Solaris operating system, and maintained on a three-year replacement cycle. Protection against hardware and software failure is provided by Veritas clustering technology and the Oracle High Availability option. The standard service agreement provides each subscriber with development, test, and production Oracle database environments, and web access to all via the Oracle Application Express (formerly HTML DB) service. The standard agreement provides the subscriber with 2 GB of storage for all applications and data, with additional storage allocated according to the subscriber's requirements. All user programs, including those to support data entry and reports, are stored with user data in the central Oracle database and backed up on a daily basis. The researcher has complete hands-on control over the creation and maintenance of user accounts and the access permissions for those accounts. "Back office" administration of the underlying hardware and software, including both database and web services, is carried out by the professional staff of ITS, including the Server and Storage Engineering group and the Database Administration group. Custom database programming services are available to the subscriber at competitive hourly rates.
