4. INFORMATION SECURITY TIP
Access Pointing Phishing: A Growing Concern

Public wireless hotspots, such as at coffee shops or airports, are very convenient but not 100% risk-free. Among various wireless scams, Access Point Phishing (AP Phishing) is particularly hard to detect. AP Phishing is a growing phenomenon where an illegitimate wireless access point (sometimes off a scam artist's laptop in the vicinity) will offer a strong wireless signal tempting the user to pay a fee to access the network. However, the promised network does not exist in reality. After having paid for the service with a credit card, the user will get an error message when attempting to connect to that wireless network. This could be an indicator that the credit card information was harvested by an AP Phishing scammer.

Be cautious when entering sensitive information on any unfamiliar wireless network.
