Good Password Basics

  • Case passwords must be at least eight characters in length. They must include at least three of the following four categories: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numerals, and punctuation.
  • Be creative and careful when selecting a password. Don’t use anything that can be easily guessed or identified with you, including personal information such as the names of your family members, including pet, hobbies, address, birthday, or commonly used words and phrases.
  • Never use your social security number as a password.
  • Don’t include your name and user id in any password.
  • One technique for selecting and remembering a password is to pick a phrase you find significant. Then, construct a password using any letter from each of the words in the phrase. Add a numeral or punctuation to the mix.
  • Passwords should be changed periodically or whenever you believe their confidentiality has been compromised.
  • Passwords should not be shared, posted, written down, or recycled.
  • Ideally, passwords should be unique for each of the different services to which you subscribe. Pick a different password for your banking accounts, credit cards, Case network services, AOL, AIM, etc.
  • Do not include your password in an automated logon process. Make the extra effort to type it in each time.
  • Passwords should also be used on laptops and mobile devices (e.g., mobile phones, Blackberries, and PDAs) to protect information on these devices.
