Blackboard Gradebook

The Gradebook can be used to post the scores of tests and assignments administered in Blackboard, but can also accommodate essay questions as well as work completed outside the Blackboard environment.

The Gradebook enables Instructors to manage Gradebook display settings and options, grade weighting, and grade downloads and uploads. It also opens to the View Spreadsheet page where organizing grades can be made easier.

Managing Items

To add or modify a Gradebook item, you must select Add Item. Here you can add the following information as needed. You can also easily modify an existing item by clicking that particular item from the grade book. Then select Item Information to modify that particular Gradebook Item. Selecting the Manage Items button will allow you to select the order of each item represented in the Gradebook. You can also reach the Add/Modify Gradebook Item screen by selecting modify.

Gradebook Settings

Spreadsheet Settings

You can change the way student grades are displayed based on name, user ID, or student ID.

Manage Gradebook Categories

You can Manage categories for weighting and filtering Gradebook items. You cannot modify predefined categories.

Manage Display Options

You can create and modify grade display options and set their values.

Weighting Grades

You can select what items within the Gradebook carry what percentage of the total grade. You can choose from either weighting each predefined category or weighting each item that has been added to the grades. Remember that weighting must total 100%.

Uploading Grades

You can take information from a file and upload it into the Blackboard Gradebook. For best results, instructors should manipulate and upload a Gradebook that has been downloaded from Blackboard. Taking an original file and uploading it into Blackboard can be problematic.

If the file matches up correctly, you will have the option to upload certain columns/items from your file and designate them as the proper existing item in Blackboard. Also, you can specify which students the Gradebook upload will affect.

Downloading Grades

Blackboard gives the option of downloading your online Gradebook into two different file types: tab delimited and comma delimited text files, which can be opened with Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet programs. You can manipulate the downloaded file and upload the changes, provided you have not altered the tab or comma format of the file. If you intend to upload your grades, it is strongly recommended that you first download the Gradebook and work with the downloaded file, as working from scratch in a user created text file may have unpredictable or unreliable results upon uploading.
