Philosophy

My approach to voice centers on developing a whole actor: an actor whose voice reveals the inner emotional state of their character. I teach my students to get beyond the idea of the voice as a tool for characterization; using the voice as a tool is a device actors use to mask themselves from their audience. I encourage actors to reveal themselves through their characters, to have the courage and generosity of spirit to allow the voice a freedom to express what the character needs to say. My teaching is a process of imparting the physical and mental skills necessary for the healthy development of the voice and the actor. ~ Shanna Beth McGee
