About Dr. Dorothy Miller

Dr. Dorothy Miller joined Case in the fall of 2002 to establish the Center for Women. Prior to joining CASE in September, Miller spent 13 years, including six as chair, on the faculty of the Center for Women's Studies at Wichita State University . She formerly served on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Community Planning. Prior to that she was the Director of the Hecht Institute for State Child Welfare Planning at the Child Welfare League of America.

Miller, who is also Clinical Associate Professor at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, has spent most of her academic life working to promote women's issues in the academy and fight for women's concerns in the community. Her research and writing has focused primarily on women's and children's poverty and the welfare system. When in Kansas she authored, under contract with the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare, a monograph, Family Poverty in Kansas: A Guide to Government Programs and Policies, and its companion volume, Understanding Family Poverty in Kansas . Her book, Women and Social Welfare: A Feminist Analysis , uses feminist theory to investigate the treatment of women in the social welfare system. Recently, she is working on the application of feminist care ethics to social welfare and other public policies.

Dr. Miller considers herself both an academic and a social activist who works "inside the system." She sees her work in the Center for Women, participation in the ACES project, and teaching at MSASS as parts of a synergistic endeavor to help in improving the lives of women. Dr. Miller received her bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Pennsylvania and her master's degree in social work and doctorate of social welfare in social policy from Columbia University .

Dr. Miller is available for speeches and interactive workshops on the topic of Women's Economic Well-being, Feminist, and other women issues. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact her at (216) 368-0985 or email to dorothy.miller@case.edu.
