Appendix B – Standard Solaris Configuration

We support the following Solaris operating systems for supported servers

  • Solaris 8 for Sparc
  • Solaris 9 for Sparc

All Solaris Servers will have the following standard load set**:

  • Host-based intrusion detection system
  • EMC EDM network backup client
  • SNMP will be enabled and restricted to ITS personnel  
  • Perl
  • Tcl/Tk
  • Scotty
  • Expect
  • Chet’s Editor (ce)
  • Emacs
  • Gcc
  • Open SSL/Open SSH
  • BZIP
  • GZIP
  • TCP wrappers
  • Sudo
  • Deamontools
  • Netscape 7 web browser
  • Oracle 9iR2 Client (full developer/manager version)
  • Lsof (List Open files) Sun package
  • BASH – Default shell

Solaris Servers used for network or server management will have the following additional standard load set**:

  • Snmp utilities (snmpget, snmpset, snmpwalk)
  • nmap

Clustered Solaris Servers will also have the following additional standard load set**:

  • Veritas SANPoint Foundation Suite/High Availability (SPFS/HA), v 3.5 or above

  ** Note: Not all of these software options may be installed today, but this is our direction.

 

We will typically disable the following services for security reasons:

telnet, rsh, rlogin, rcp, rexec, and ftp.

The recommended service is SSH.

Typical Hardware Configurations for Solaris Servers

A typical 4-rack unit Solaris production or testing server as of August 20, 2003 will have the following configuration.  It will be a Sun Fire V480 4-processor system with 8 gigabytes of memory, two 73-gigabyte FC-AL SCSI-3 disk drives, a DVD-ROM drive, two built-in 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, and four 10/100 Ethernet ports.
