POP vs. IMAP vs. Webmail (mail.case.edu and Google Apps)

Case supports both POP and IMAP mailbox to download, read, reply, and send messages. Your individual work habits, preferences, and mobile requirements should determine which option you choose

Post Office Protocol, or POP, stores emails on the mail server until the user’s computer connects to the mail server and downloads the new messages.  POP users normally use an email software client loaded on their computer, such as Outlook, Eudora, or Thunderbird.  If they are away from their computer, they can use a Web browser to see only the new messages not yet downloaded to their computer.

Internet Message Access Protocol, or IMAP, stores email messages on a mail server until they are manually moved to a computer or deleted.  IMAP users have the option to use either an email client OR a web browser to interact with their emails.  IMAP users who use a client normally save their messages in folders on their computer.  IMAP users who use a web browser save their messages using the webmail interface.

Case offers two webmail interfaces: the traditional web mail mailbox (mail.case.edu) which includes a 200 MB mailbox, and the new Case Google Apps mailbox, which includes a much larger 2 GB mailbox.
