Case Western Reserve University has been awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating for the entire Village at 115residence hall complex. The U.S. Green Building Council awards LEED ratings for buildings that are considered to be the most "green," energy efficient and high performing.
"It's among the first in the region to be recognized,” Don Kamalsky, associate vice president for student affairs for campus life facilities, said of the building complex. “A team of people made this happen. We can take great pride in receiving this national recognition." Case Western Reserve was notified of the rating this month. The residence hall, which opened in 2005, was designed to achieve LEED certification through a variety of measures. Efficient heating, lighting, and water systems were installed, in addition to energy-efficient windows and wall and roof systems. Recycled and regionally manufactured building materials were used during construction, and efficient building practices reduced construction waste.
The Village at 115 uses 40 percent less energy annually than conventional buildings. The LEED report also recognized the hall's indoor environmental quality, as well as its access to alternative transportation. The LEED Silver honor is the second major rating for the residence hall in the last year. Last summer, House 5 in the Village received LEED Gold, the second highest certification. Kamalsky said the university will receive a plaque for its efforts. Recently, the university has demonstrated its commitment to a variety of sustainability initiatives. Last summer, President Barbara R. Snyder signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, and for 2009, the university improved its sustainability grade on the Rockefeller College Sustainability Report Card.
