Weatherhead School of Management to Launch Joint Double-Degree Masters Program in China

The Weatherhead School of Management has joined with the School of Economics and Management (SEM) at Tongji University, Shanghai, China, to develop a unique double-degree program. The program is expected to launch in September 2011. Upon completion of the program, students will earn both a Master of Science in Management-Finance from Weatherhead and a Master of Business Administration from SEM Tongji. This program is the first MS-Finance program from a top U.S. university to be offered in mainland China.

In addition to the opportunity to gain cutting-edge knowledge and skills in global finance, students will learn broad management competencies at a top Chinese university, work with internationally-renowned faculty with extensive research and industry experience, network with financial sector players in the United States, and intern in Shanghai’s Lujiazui/Pudong international finance and trade area. Students will take ten SEM Tongji courses and twelve Weatherhead courses; the program is designed for part-time students, will offer classes outside normal working hours and may be completed in five semesters.

SEM Tongji is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China. Among its 4,200 academic staff of over 710 professors and 1,500 associate professors, there are six members of the Chinese Academy of Science and seven members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. SEM Tongji started offering education in economics and management in 1956. Since then, it has consistently attracted talented students and demonstrated academic excellence, ranking 12th in China in Forbes’ 2007 list of the best business schools. In Forbes’ 2005 survey, the SEM Tongji part-time MBA placed 9th, and graduates of the school earned the 6th highest salary.

Weatherhead has a second international degree initiative in development—a Masters in Positive Organizational Development program in India. Weatherhead also offers students opportunities to participate in international institutes, exchange semesters and the MBA Enterprise Corps (in which students serve as business advisors to companies, development banks and consulting firms in emerging market nations).
