Collaboration Among CWRU and Ugandan Universities Addresses HIV/AIDS

Janet McGrath, Associate Professor of Anthropology, is co-director with Dr. Charles Rwabukwali, Professor of Sociology at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, of the Center for Social Science Research on AIDS (CeSSRA), an NIH-funded project. Dr. David Kaawa-Mafigiri, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at Makerere University, is Associate Director. Both Dr. Rwabukwali and Dr. Kaawa-Mafigiri received a Ph.D. in Anthropology from CWRU. CeSSRA is a collaboration among CWRU, Makerere University, the Joint Clinical Research Centre in Kampala and Mbarara University of Science and Technology that seeks to develop and expand local capacity to undertake social science research on HIV/AIDS in Uganda and promote, foster and conduct social science research on HIV prevention and treatment. Activities include sponsoring workshops on research methods, a public lecture series and training research fellows in research design. The project involves faculty at all three universities. CeSSRA also is conducting a two-year longitudinal study of over 900 men and women currently receiving HIV treatment at two locations in Uganda to better understand the social context of long-term treatment.
