WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY
DEPARTMENT OF POLICE AND SECURITY SERVICES SECURITY ALERT Type of Incident: RobberyLocation of Incident: Elephant Stairs (stairway connecting the upper and lower south residence halls, adjacent to Fribley Commons on the lower side and Carlton Commons on the upper side). Date of Incident: Friday, 4/13/07 Time of Incident: 5:00pm Incident Description: A male student was walking up the Elephant Stairs when he was approached from behind by the suspect, who asked for $5. When the student replied that he did not have any money, the suspect grabbed the student’s jacket and pushed him against the handrail. The suspect demanded the student’s wallet, and the student gave the suspect his wallet. The suspect then asked for the student’s cell phone, which the student gave him. The student continued up the stairs with the suspect following and apologizing for taking his property. The suspect fled on foot toward Overlook Drive and to Cedar Road. Description of Suspect(s): The suspect was described as a black male, 20 to 30 years old, 6 ft., 180 lbs., medium build, dark complexion, mustache, wearing a black nylon cap, a knee length black nylon coat, black jeans and black shoes. Additional Information: The student did not report any injuries from this incident. The suspect description and m.o. are similar to the robbery that occurred at the Elephant Stairs on 3/31/07. Police and Security Services and University Circle Police have increased patrol and surveillance of the area. Please contact Police and Security Services immediately at 368-3333 if you notice suspicious activity in this area, or if you have any information that may help police with either of these crimes. Awareness Information -To report a crime, suspicious activity or any emergency, please immediately contact the Protective Services Dispatch Center , 24 hours a day, at 368-3333 . Dispatchers will direct the appropriate University and City responders for the situation. - Protective Services and University Circle Police patrol the campus continually in patrol vehicles, utility vehicles, bicycles, and on foot. - Escorts are provided anywhere on campus and locations immediately adjacent to campus. Request an escort 24 hours a day by calling 368-3333 or by using an emergency phone, located throughout the campus. - Protect yourself by using the campus bus service http://greenie.case.edu/ or the escort service rather than walking alone. Jog or bike during daylight only in areas you are familiar with and stay within University Circle http://www.universitycircle.org/uc_maps_parking.asp# if you live on campus. Let a responsible person know where you are going, when you will return and how to contact you if you go somewhere alone outside of your normal routine. Trust your gut feelings and avoid persons and situations that make you feel uncomfortable. - Protect your belongings by locking your office/room door every time you leave, don't leave purses, book bags, laptops and other valuables unattended. Keep valuables out of site in your car. Don't allow tailgaters to enter secured doors behind you.
