SECURITY ALERT  

 

Case Western Reserve University Police and Security Services 

 

This incident occurred off campus and did not involve a member of the university community, but because of the proximity to campus, Case Western Reserve Police and Security Services would like the university to be informed.

 

 

 

Type of Incident: Robbery

 

Location of Incident: East 118th Street near Wade Park Oval

 

Date of Incident: October 4, 2008

 

Time of Incident: 7:21 a.m.

 

Incident Description: A man was walking alone, south on East 118th Street near Wade Park Oval, when he was approached from behind by two unknown suspects. One of the suspects asked the man for a cigarette, and when the man stopped to provide one, the suspect pointed a handgun at him. The second suspect then removed money and a cell phone from the man's pockets, and the two suspects fled on foot north on East 118th Street and then west on Wade Park.

 

Suspect Descriptions: The first suspect is described as a black man, 30 to 35 years old, about 6' or 6'1" tall, weighing around 170 pounds. His head was shaved and he had a thin mustache. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black skull cap and dark pants. A detailed description was not available for the second suspect.

 

Additional Information: The man was not injured. The area immediately was patrolled for suspects, but none were identified. The University Circle Police Detective Bureau continues to investigate. 

 

Since the beginning of September, Case Western Reserve Police and Security Services has increased its patrols, particularly on the north campus. In addition to uniformed police, plain clothes officers also have been deployed.

Case Western Reserve Police and Security officers and University Circle Police patrol the campus continually in patrol vehicles, utility vehicles, bicycles and on foot.  

 

Escorts are provided anywhere on campus and in areas immediately adjacent to campus. Request an escort anytime, 24 hours a day, by calling 368-3333 or by using emergency phones located throughout campus.

 

Rather than walking alone, protect yourself by using the campus bus service http://greenie.case.edu/  or the escort service. Jog or bike during daylight and only in areas with which you are familiar. Stay within University Circle http://www.universitycircle.org/uc_maps_parking.asp# if you live on campus. Let a responsible person know where you are going, when you will return and how to contact you if you go somewhere alone outside of your normal routine. Trust your “gut” feelings and avoid persons and situations that make you feel uncomfortable.

 

Protect your belongings by locking your office or room door every time you leave. Don’t leave purses, book bags, laptops and other valuables unattended, and keep valuables out of site in your car. Don’t allow “tailgaters” to enter secured doors behind you. Report thefts or suspicious activity immediately to Case Police at 368-3333.
