Understanding People with Disabilities

This information is intended to provide an overview of Case Western Reserve University's policies and services as related to members of the university community with disabilities. It is not meant to be a comprehensive explanation of the requirements of the American Disabilities Act of 1990.

Recruitment strategy for persons with disabilities

The university is constantly seeking the best individuals available for employment. As part of ongoing recruitment efforts, Case solicits applications from a number of local organizations, which refer individuals with disabilities. Guidelines for interviewers

The "Supervisor's Guide to Interviewing," issued by the Employment office, offers general guidance and legal perspectives of interviewing. Supervisors may make pre-employment inquiries into the ability of the applicant to perform essential functions, as indicated in the job description, but must avoid questions directed to the individuals real or perceived disability.

Only ask questions that relate to the essential function of the job as listed in the job description. Do not make notes during the interview regarding any characteristic of the applicant related to an apparent disability.

Do not ask:

  • About any visible physical characteristics, i.e. scars, burns, missing limbs.
  • If the applicant is in good health.
  • If an applicant has ever had an emotional illness or has consulted a psychologist or psychiatrist.
  • If an applicant has ever had an injury or disease.
  • About braces or prosthetics you may notice.
  • If the applicant has ever had a drug or drinking problem.
  • If anyone in his/her family or any acquaintance has an illness or injury or a history of illness.
  • Questions that were not asked of all other applicants for the position.

What you may ask:

  • Questions regarding any information on the application.
  • What did your prior job duties consist of?
  • Can you reach the top of a six-foot-high filing cabinet (if it is an essential function included in the job description)?
  • Can you lift 50 lb. (if it is an essential function included in the job description)?
  • Do you have a driver's license (if it is an essential function included in the job description)?
  • Can you read a video display terminal (if it is an essential function included in the job description)?
  • Are you capable of standing for three hours (if it is an essential function included in the job description)?
  • After an applicant has inquired about obtaining a reasonable accommodation, it is permissible to ask the applicant what he/she will require to perform the position.
