Annual MLK Convocation: Lessons from Little Rock

Sponsored by the Office of the President, Undergraduate Student Government, University Program Board, University Programs and Events, the Share the Vision Committee, and the Department of History

We remember the 50th anniversary of the integration of then all-white Central High School, and welcome Ernest Green as he shares his personal experiences as one of the courageous black students we have come to know as the "Little Rock Nine." Several books, movies and documentaries have been produced chronicling Green and his eight classmates' historic year at Central High School in Little Rock, Ark.—the most recent being the Ernest Green Story.

MLK Day Third Annual Student Luncheon

12 noon to 4 p.m., Excelsior Ballroom, Thwing Center

Sponsored by Student Affairs, the Share the Vision Committee, Interfraternity Congress, Panhellenic Council, and Bon Appétit

This interactive conference with break-out sessions allows students an opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate the legacy of Dr. King. Keynote speaker, James West Davidson, author and historian, will help us understand the significance of the "noose" in our society and appreciate the power and influence that one individual can have in standing up for justice. Open to all undergraduate and graduate/professional students at Case Western Reserve University. Space is limited. RVSP online by January 17, 2008.

From Swastika to Jim Crow

A film and discussion on the little-known story of Jewish refugee scholars who fled Nazi Germany and arrived in the United States to find themselves excluded from mainstream American universities but welcomed at historically black colleges.

I Have a Dream: Health Disparities Forum

Five Cleveland-area physicians with a background in health disparity research and serving minority populations will discuss their involvement in the abolishment of health disparities. Speakers include Dr. James Black, Dr. Sonja Harris-Haywood, Dr. Carla Harwell, and Dr. Lyla Blake-Gumbs from University Hospitals and Dr. Timothy Gillian from the Cleveland Clinic.
