MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CELEBRATION

2009 Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest

Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King
Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King leading the
1965 civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery

This year's MLK convocation speaker, Keith Beauchamp, was ten years old when he first developed an interest in the life and death of Emmitt Till. After seeing images of fourteen year-old Till before and after he was murdered in 1955 for whistling at a white-woman in Mississippi, Beauchamp was deeply troubled. He would later create a film about Till's life, death and the subsequent trial. It took Beauchamp over ten years to complete the film "The Untold Story of Emmitt Louis Till." Beauchamp was determined to play a role in righting this historical wrong.
