Graduates shine brightly—even in inclement conditions

CWRU students line up for commencement holding umbrellas

May 15, 2016

Case Western Reserve University President Barbara R. Snyder told the Class of 2016 Sunday morning that she knew students had faced many tests during their time on campus, but “commencement was not supposed to be one of them.”

While early forecasts predicted inclement weather would pass before the graduation procession began, Mother Nature had different ideas, pouring a mix of rain and sleet on the lines of graduates clad in regalia and carrying umbrellas. And yet, as Alumni Association Board President Jeffrey Verespej reminded the thousands gathered, it was Cleveland, so the weather was sure to change soon.

It did, even before the undergraduate diploma ceremony began, as blue sky began to peek out amid puffy white clouds above Severance Hall, and quickly spread across  the campus. The wacky weather was apropos, some seniors observed; the Class of 2016 already had experienced some of the city’s coldest stretches during their times here—and in the past academic year, Cleveland’s warmest December ever.
